Tokyo, June 23, 2003
- Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) today announced production, sales, and export results for May 2003.
Total worldwide production in May decreased 1.5 percent to 125,663 units. Of this, production in Japan climbed 11.6 percent to 54,920 units, up for the first time in four months.
Overseas production, meanwhile, slipped 9.7 percent to 70,743 units, marking the first decrease in five months. By area, Asia excluding Japan fell 6.1 percent to 42,202 units. North America dropped 11.1 percent to 17,526 units and European production totaled 6,659 units, down 20.7 percent from May 2002.
Domestic sales including minicars gained 4.2 percent on year to 23,972, up for the first time in two months on strong initial sales of the new Grandis minivan, which hit the market on May 17.
MMC's domestic share, including minicars and imports, edged up 0.2 percent on year to 5.7 percent.
Exports from Japan declined for the second straight month, dropping 11.7 percent to 21,247 units. By area, exports to Asia totaled 3,710 units, North America 5,594 units, and Europe 5,393 units. As a result of the spin-off of MMC's truck and bus operations in January 2003, regional year-on-year changes are not available due to a change in the system used to tally exports.
