Global production for the month declined 9.1 percent on year to 126,522 units. In Japan, production grew for the first time in five months, rising 2.4 percent to 67,105 units.

Overseas production declined 19.3 percent to 59,417, weighed down by reduced production in North America and Europe. By region, production in Asia slipped 13.6 percent to 39,126 while North American output dropped 27.5 percent to 12,041 units. European production declined for the second straight month following the end of production of the Carisma in December last year. Despite a 45 percent decline in February to 3,574 units, the company expects to see an upturn in European production when it begins manufacturing the new European Colt at its NedCar plant in the Netherlands.

Total domestic sales were off 7.7 percent at 30,512. Sales of 660cc minicars, however, returned to growth, increasing 5 percent on year thanks to healthy sales of the eK Series and Pajero Mini. MMC's domestic market share inched down 0.5 percentage point to 5.8 percent.

Exports from Japan declined 8.4 percent to 29,104 units. By region, exports to Asia rose 30.4 percent to 5,479 units, North American exports dropped 75.4 percent to 3,005, and Europe-bound shipments jumped 61.4 percent to 10,549.
