Mitsubishi Motors Announces Production, Domestic Sales, Exports for May 2004

— Asian, European exports and production show strong growth —

Tokyo, June 25, 2004  — Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) today announced production, domestic sales, and export results for May 2004. Exports to Asia and Europe surged on year, while production in both regions returned to growth for the first time in five months.

Global production in May totaled 117,744 units, a decrease of 6.3 percent compared to May last year.

Output in Japan was off for the first time in four months, declining 18.5 percent to 44,752 units. The decline comes on the back of slower production of the Grandis minivan compared to this time last year when production was ramped up for its launch on May 14. Despite the decline in passenger car production, light commercial vehicles continued to show strong year-on-year growth. Production of the Minicab surged 89.5 percent while the Minicab Van jumped 53 percent on year.

Offshore production grew 3.2 percent in May to 72,992 units, marking the first gain in five months. Production in Asia was up 14.2 percent to 48,200 units as MMC's factory in Thailand pushed out 61.5 percent more Europe-bound pickup trucks than last year. European production also enjoyed strong growth in May, expanding 31.8 percent to 8,775 units as production of the new Mitsubishi Colt for Europe continued to pick up speed. North American output, meanwhile, decreased 33.1 percent to 11,733 units.

Sales in Japan declined for the fifth month in May, down 38.8 percent on year to 14,672 units. Of this, registrations, which exclude 660cc minicars, declined 56.3 percent to 4,213 while minicars dropped 27 percent to 10,459 units. MMC's share of the domestic market in May was 3.8 percent, down from 5.7 percent in May last year.

Exports from Japan grew for the second consecutive month, gaining 15.2 percent on year to 24,487 units. By region, exports to Asia jumped 42.5 percent to 5,285 units, exports to North America decreased 77.7 percent to 1,246 and shipments to Europe surged 90.1 percent to 10,250 units following the European launch of the Grandis in April and strong sales of the Pajero Sport sport-utility vehicle.
