Fifth Meeting of Business Ethics Committee

Tokyo, September 6, 2004  — The Business Ethics Committee, an advisory body for the Mitsubishi Motors board of directors, held its fifth meeting today.

At today's meeting, the following three points were received from Mitsubishi Motors:

  1. The press conference on August 26th concerning the expanded investigation into the recall problem
  2. The beginning of public hearings on September 1st regarding the Mitsubishi Fuso Truck hub problem case
  3. The investigation into the causes and background of past recall problems and the overall status of the investigation (interim report from lawyers outside of the company)

In relation to these points, committee members made the following remarks:

  • Concerning the expanded investigation into the recall problem, it can be said that the investigation is presently concluded. Nevertheless, you must increase the proportion of repaired vehicles, all efforts must be taken to ensure the safety of Mitsubishi Motors' vehicles, and if defective products are found that they are dealt with sincerely.
  • If there is any doubt whether or not there should be post market measures undertaken, in that event you must establish a system that judges the matter from a customer safety perspective, in line with conscientious manufacturing.

Concerning the internal investigation

  • Today's report is an interim version only, and more intensive research is on-going. A complete report will be presented at a later date.
  • More specific investigation is required to determine whether or not the causes of this situation are due to the corporate culture of Mitsubishi Motors.

Additionally, committee member Kazuko Miyamoto explained the action plan for the Okazaki production facility visit by the consumers group that was accepted at the 4th Business Ethics Committee Meeting. Miyamoto met with female employees to exchange views on the reform of corporate culture within Mitsubishi Motors.
