MMC eco-friendly approach to fluorocarbon recovery

  • MMC is to further boost recovery of fluorocarbon1 air conditioner refrigerants from end-of-life Mitsubishi-brand automobiles.
  • To mitigate the cost of recovery to users, MMC is to employ the Automobile Fluorocarbon Extraction and Destruction System developed by the Japan Automobile Recycling Promotion Center.

Date: July 31, 2002 Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, in line with its efforts to prevent global warming, has decided to employ the Automobile Fluorocarbon Extraction and Destruction System - announced by the Japan Automobile Recycling Promotion Center on 12 July - to dispose, completely and at low cost, of fluorocarbon air conditioner refrigerants in end-of-life automobiles. (See below [Reference(2)] for conceptual diagram of system; further details are available at JARC's web site.)

The Fluorocarbon Recovery and Destruction Law2 promulgated in June 2001 comes into full force in Japan on 1 October this year. The law makes auto makers responsible for the recovery and disposal of fluorocarbon gases. In view of the likelihood that JARC will be working with other Japanese auto manufacturers and vehicle importers, MMC has decided that using the JARC system will enable it to reduce the cost burden on dismantlers and on Mitsubishi car users to a greater extent than by an independently developed recovery and disposal system (see below [Reference(1)] for cost comparison).

MMC announced the MMC Environmental Sustainability Plan in June this year. Taking "sustainability" as its keyword, the plan coordinates and promotes a wide range of activities that enable MMC to contribute to continuing economic growth and development of society and, at the same time, to preserve and maintain a healthy and sound environment.
