New MMC Compact Car to Be Named "Colt"

Date: June 25, 2002
  1. The Colt, to be introduced in Japan this fall, will be MMC's "global strategic car", representing the company's new design identity, developed under the alliance with DaimlerChrysler. The Colt will reflect new MMC emphasis on manufacturing to provide full customer satisfaction.

  2. The name Colt has a distinguished history. MMC gave the same name to its Mitsubishi passenger car [the Colt 600, in 1962], Japan's first fastback model [Colt 800, in 1965], and was the Japan's first car to be equipped with a tilt steering column [New Colt 1200/1500, in 1968]. Colt also competed in motor sports activities. The "Colt" is a name that not only embodies the legacy and pride of Mitsubishi Motors, but also stands out in the history of Japan's automobile history.

  3. MMC CEO Rolf Eckrodt said that rather than create a new name for the new model, "I wanted to rekindle the spirit that embodies the legacy and pride of Mitsubishi Motors. The Colt will be the first in a series of new MMC models that will turn dreams into reality."
