Mitsubishi Motors Announces Production, Sales and Exports for May 2006

Tokyo, June 26, 2006 — Mitsubishi Motors Corporation today announced global production, as well as domestic sales and export results for May 2006.

Total global production totaled 101,801 units, a 4.2 percent increase from the production in May 2005. Japanese production came to 50,424 units, representing a 22.2 percent increase over the year ago period. Domestic production has now increased year-on-year for twelve consecutive months.

Total sales in Japan came to 16,888 units, a 14.1 percent increase year-on-year, marking the thirteenth consecutive month of year-on-year growth in the domestic market. Sales in both the registered car and minicar categories saw healthy growth, registering respective sales levels of 109.8 percent and 115.7 percent of last year's totals. Total sales for passenger vehicles came to 11,510 units, a robust 123.5 percent of the volume for May 2005, while commercial vehicle sales fell slightly to 5,378 units, a 1.9 percent decline from the total for the same period last year.

Overseas production for the month totaled 51,377 units, or 91.0 percent of the amount manufactured in the year ago period. European production more than doubled over last year's total to 9,149 units (221.7 percent of the May 2005 figure). Asian production totaled 30,542 units, 75.3 percent of the year ago total, due to the end of production of models at MMC's partner Proton in Malaysia. Lastly, production in North America increased to 8,065 units, up a strong 11.7 percent over the previous period due to continued strong sales of the new Eclipse sporty coupe and Eclipse Spyder convertible models.

Total exports from Japan rose to 34,457 units, 167.8 percent year-on-year. Exports to Europe increased to 12,578 units, 246.8 percent of the May 2005, due to strong Lancer sales in Russia. Exports to Asia came in at 1,961 units, or 52.1 percent of the year ago export volume, while exports to North America came in at 4,214 units, a 65.8 percent rise year-on-year.
