Mitsubishi Motors Corporation announces the introduction
of the latest series of its highly popular PAJERO (MONTERO or SHOGUN in
some markets) model. Since its debut in 1982, the PAJERO has continued
to set the pace in terms of advanced technology. Exported to 151 countries,
PAJERO enjoys firm support throughout the world. The new PAJERO goes on
sale throughout Japan at Galant dealerships on Friday, May 9.
PAJERO has participated with great success in the Paris-Dakar
Rally and other motor sports events which serve as grueling proving grounds
for vehicle durability and reliability. In the 1997 Dakar Rally, Mitsubishi
Motors' employee Kenjiro Shinozuka became the first Japanese driver to
take overall honors when he piloted his PAJERO to victory ahead of two
other PAJEROs in a 1-2-3 sweep. Feeding back the know-how and experience
garnered in such events and reflecting it in the production vehicle enables
us to hone further PAJERO's basic automotive technology.
Now Mitsubishi Motors is proud to introduce the latest
PAJERO series, incorporating the very latest in Mitsubishi automotive
technology. Powered by the environment-friendly, ultra-efficiency
V6 3.5-liter *1GDI engine (*2 a world first) mated to the INVECS-II with
Sport Mode 5-speed automatic transmission, the new PAJERO returns miserly
fuel consumption while delivering high performance. The improved performance
is complemented by new interior and exterior trim, including attractively
styled integral blister fenders, and by an enhanced safety specification.
And despite this gamut of improvements, the new PAJERO models are priced
more competitively than ever.

Main Product Features
1. Major improvement in performance
(1) Environment-friendly V6 3.5-liter GDI engine a world first
The new PAJERO is powered by the first V6 3.5-liter
version of Mitsubishi's revolutionary GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection)
engine. With man and the global environment foremost in mind, the next-generation
GDI engine has been developed to curb carbon dioxide emissions, return
diesel-beating mileage and deliver more power than a port-injection
power unit.
Compared with its port-injection cousin of the same
displacement, the new V6 3.5-liter GDI engine generates 10% more power
at normal operating speeds (600 rpm -- 2500 rpm), returns 30% better
fuel economy and produces 30% less of the C02 that is a factor in global
warming. And for more relaxed RV motoring, the engine also generates
significantly more low-end and mid-range torque.

(2) Other engines
The 4M40 2.8-liter intercooler/ turbocharger diesel
engine, highly rated for its clean combustion and high power output,
features better response as well as a number of other improvements.
Ensuring that all user needs are accommodated, new
PAJERO models are powered by the 6G72 V6 24-valve 3-liter gasoline engine
with a new high-precision electronic fuel injection system boosting
power to 185PS, and the 4G64 2.4-liter 16-valve gasoline engine.

(3) INVECS-II with Sport Mode 5-speed automatic transmission
The new PAJERO is fitted with Mitsubishi Motors' INVECS-II
"smart" automatic transmission incorporating Optimum Shift Control and
Adaptive Shift Control to enable safer and more strain-free driving.
This version of INVECS-II has been specially developed for rear-wheel
drive vehicles.
The Sport Mode clutch-less manual override feature
allows the enthusiast driver to "work" his transmission like a manual
gearbox for added driving safety and pleasure. Sport Mode contributes
to outstanding performance both on- and off-tarmac by enabling the driver
to hold the transmission in the gear of his choice without it automatically
shifting up or down.
6G74 GDI models employ INVECS-II with Sport Mode 5-speed
A/T. Metal Top Wide ZR diesel models use INVECS-II with Sport Mode 4-speed
A/T and all other diesel models use INVECS-II 4-speed A/T.
2. New-look interior & exterior trim
(1) Exterior
New styling elements include: a wide-look grille design;
styled garnish that gives a tauter, more dashing look to the front view;
and multi-parabola double-lens combination lamps.
Sculptured "blister" fenders front and rear replace
the moldings used on the previous series. The muscular, athletic design
of these over-fenders projects a powerful, feral appearance.
The side-step is integrally molded into the mud-guard and flows attractively
into the body lines, making entry and egress significantly easier and
improving the appearance.
The new PAJERO series makes more extensive use of privacy
glass.
(2) Interior
Wood-grain paneling in the dashboard and a wood-rim
steering wheel give the interior a classier look. Standard on Metal
Top Wide ZR-S, Mid-roof Wide SUPER EXCEED, and EXCEED models.
New-look door trim design features a larger area covered
in seat upholstery material, giving a classier, more open and airier
look to the interior.
(3) Equipment and fittings
MMCS (Mitsubishi Multi-Communication System), which
displays a wide variety of navigation and other data and information,
is standard equipment on the Mid-roof Wide SUPER EXCEED.
A multi-mode keyless entry system enables the driver
to operate, in addition to the door locks, the power windows as well
as to fold back or deploy the exterior mirrors, from outside the vehicle.
Standard on Metal Top Wide ZR-S, ZR, Mid-roof Wide GR, SUPER EXCEED,
EXCEED and Kickup Roof GR models.
A larger capacity floor console with a two-deck construction
and push-operated cup holders are among the improvements to the convenience
specification and standard on all models.
Entry and egress are improved on all models with the
addition of assist grips for rear seat passengers, and for both driver
and front seat passenger.
Extendable sun visors for the side windows help keep
out the blazing sun on Metal Top Wide ZR-S, ZR, Mid-roof Wide GR, SUPER
EXCEED, EXCEED, and Kickup Roof GR models.
6-speaker AM/FM full-logic cassette player systems
get tweeter-type front speakers (at the base of the front pillars) for
improved sound quality. Standard on Mid-roof Wide, SUPER EXCEED and
EXCEED models, available on all others.
The CD changer is installed under the front passenger
seat , enabling more effective use to be made of the cargo space.
3. Safety specification
All models are fitted as standard with SRS airbags
for both driver and front seat passenger.
All models are fitted as standard with Mitsubishi's
Multi-mode anti-lock braking system that maintains a stable body attitude
and enables the driver to retain directional control under all road
conditions, whether in 4WD or 2WD mode.
All power-window models are fitted as standard with
an anti-trapping mechanism for improved safety when operating the windows.
Seat belts on the second-row rear seats in long-body
models and rear seats on short body models are fitted with ELR/ALR changeover
switches enabling child safety seats to be located more securely.
4. Highly competitive prices
Despite the GDI engine, INVECS-II with Sport Mode A/T,
new-look interior and exterior trim, and significant improvements in
equipment and safety specifications, the new PAJERO models are offered
at highly competitive prices.
5. PAJERO Nest: lite-camper
The PAJERO Nest lite-camper that has proved so popular
with auto-camping, fishing and other outdoor sports enthusiasts has
also undergone an extensive improvement program and will go on sale
on May 9.
