engines.
Main exhibits
- HSR-VI (Highly Sophisticated-transport Research)
A further evolution of the HSR-V displayed at the 1995 Tokyo Motor
Show, this advance model explores 21st century mobility, supporting
both automated driving and fun-to-drive driver-operated modes.
(1) Styling
- "Architecture" provides the exterior design theme. Individual
body sections are designed with clearly defined functions and skillfully
married together to produce an appearance that blends in with an
urban landscape of the near future.
- "Function & Furniture" provide the theme for the interior. For
Automated Driving Mode, extensive use of domestic furnishing materials
creates a relaxing space. For Driver Operated Mode, the interior
is given a clean, functional look to encourage maximum concentration.
(2) Optimum Cabin: Safe and comfortable environment
- Two configurations provide optimal fields of view and operating
positions for the two different driving modes. In Automated Driving
Mode, the driver is relieved of driving tasks and so the seats are
reclined and the steering control is retracted to create an environment
that encourages maximum relaxation. In Driver Operated Mode, meanwhile,
the Optimum Cabin rises up at the rear to give SUV-like downward
visibility and driving position and field of view are optimized
to enable the driver to assume maximum control over his vehicle.
(300 mm change in overall height between Automated and Driver Operated
modes.)
- Safety cabin. The Optimum Cabin comprises a rigid space frame
of extruded aluminum members, covered in impact-resistant polycarbonate
outer panels. The cabin is surrounded by structural members to provide
a highly-efficient crash-energy absorbing structure that provides
occupant protection in impacts from all angles.
(3) Controls and indicators realize more comfortable driving
Automated Driving Control
- HSR-VI supports two reliable automated driving modes: (1) Autonomous
Driving Mode, a combination of Lane Tracing that uses forward, rearward
and lateral stereo image sensors and laser radar to follow white
lane lines and Preview Distance Control; (2) Controlled Automatic
Operation Mode, that uses communications from lane markers and road-car
infrastructure that communicates road environment and conditions.
All-wheel Control
- Integrates All-wheel Active Steer, Twin-AYC + ASC and ECS advanced
active safety systems to enable driver to follow his chosen line
in all driving conditions.
Adaptive Information System
- In Automated Driving Mode, the Interactive Multi-Display deploys
from the roof enabling the driver to access the Internet, traffic,
weather and other information services using the Multi-dimension
Controller located between the front seats. Definitely a feature
for our information society.
- In Driver Operated Mode, a screen located within the driver's
field of view provides only the information necessary for operating
the vehicle.
(4) Active safety and environment technology
GDI engine + CVT
- The powertrain uses the widely-acclaimed GDI engine (2.4-liter)
mated to a continuously variable transmission. Anticipating acceleration
requirements from the driver's use of the accelerator and driving
pattern, the step-less gear ratios in the CVT enable the power unit
to operate at its most efficient speed and deliver the miserly fuel
consumption and high power that are trademarks of the GDI engine.
Cameras and sensors
- In Automated Driving Mode, stereo image sensors and scanning laser
radar constantly monitor the vehicle perimeter. The system alerts
the driver on detection of an obstacle and initiates emergency avoidance
measures to prevent accidents. A camera monitors the driver's eye
movements and urges the driver to stop and rest when it detects
a drop in alertness or if the driver's eyes stray from the road
ahead.
- TETRA (Thoroughbred styling Ergonomic multi function
interior Technologically advanced sporty performance RISE
& All-round information system)
(1) Concept
- To a "Sophisticated outdoor leisure vehicle for urban dwellers"
theme, this new-genre SUV brings together sporty performance and 21st
century levels of safety, comfort and utility. Fun to own and fun
to use in all situations, whether everyday driving about town or zipping
down to your favorite leisure destination.
(2) Utility
Packaging
- Measuring 4505 mm long x 1855 mm wide and 1645 mm high, TETRA's
packaging combines sporty performance with superior carrying capacity
for outdoor leisure equipment and other items.
- Overall height is significantly lower than current SUV's, and with
its low center of gravity powertrain layout, wide tracks and wide
tires, TETRA delivers agile, stable tarmac performance.
- At 558 mm, the cabin floor is 200 mm lower than SUV's on the market
today, making loading and unloading bulky and heavy leisure equipment
much easier. And at 1050 mm high, the luggage compartment takes mountain
bikes and makes TETRA's interior ideal for outdoor leisure use. A
low-friction floor covering makes shifting heavy items around easier,
and is ideal for carrying wet equipment.
- The front and rear doors both open at the center line, facilitating
entry and exit and the loading of small items of luggage. The tailgate
comprises a lower section with side-by-side gates that open at the
center line, and an upper section with a power-operated window that
slides up into the roof to open.
Seat arrangements
- The pipecot seats use pipe frames covered with yellow-beige netting
and have blue leather cushions. The excellent ventilation makes them
ideal for carrying passengers wearing wet swimwear.
- The rear seats are ultra-lightweight and have smaller squab cushions.
They may be removed from the vehicle and used as beach chairs or folded
back to provide a cargo retainer.
- The two basic seating patterns provide seating for two with generous
luggage space, or seating for four. A third row of seats may be fitted
in the luggage compartment.
- A walk-through aisle allows movement between the front seats and
the luggage compartment. Opening the power-operated tailgate window
realizes a pickup truck-like space ideal for carrying longer items.
(3) Safety
Pedestrian-friendly outer panels and shape
- The leading edge of the engine hood is shaped for good visibility,
and the flexible plastic bumper provides pedestrian protection. A
gap between hood and internal frame provides a generous impact-absorbing
stroke, while the hood itself employs an energy-absorbing construction.
A flexible plastic protector runs around the perimeter of the body,
helping to give TETRA safety performance superior to current SUV's.
AYC (Active Yaw Control)
- TETRA employs Mitsubishi's AYC advanced active safety system that
transfers torque to the offside wheel and generates a yaw (turning)
moment in a 4WD vehicle to equalize the loading on the tires and improve
cornering performance.
Airbag system
- Driver and front passenger are provided with SRS airbags and side
airbags.
Safety body
- TETRA uses a high energy-absorbing body construction that meets
Japanese crash safety requirements as well as providing high levels
of frontal offset and side crash safety.
(4) Drivetrain
Engine
- TETRA is powered by the 6G72 3.0-liter V6 GDI 24-valve DOHC unit,
a member of Mitsubishi's revolutionary ultra-efficiency GDI family
of eco-engines that combine frugal fuel economy with higher power
outputs.
INVECS-II with Sports Mode 5-speed automatic transmission
- Mitsubishi's smart automatic transmission with Adaptive Shift Control,
Optimum Shift Control, clutch-less manual override and Japan's first
Dash-Shift Selector makes driving easier, and more fun.
Electronically controlled full-time 4WD
- TETRA uses a derivative of Mitsubishi's center differential full-time
4WD, incorporating fuzzy logic control of the hydraulically operated
multi-plate clutch to provide optimal torque split ranging from 32:68
to direct-coupled 4WD, automatically and flexibly as required by different
surface conditions.
(5) Design
- TETRA's design wraps the comfortable mobile space and superior load
capability required to enjoy outdoor leisure in an appearance characterized
by a strong presence and a stability that befits a new-form SUV. This
concept model naturally gives careful attention to safety and environmental
considerations.
(6) Other features
Wheels and tires
- An exclusive design of alloy road wheel is shod with special 255
/ 40ZR19 all-terrain tires to give TETRA mountain-goat traction on
all surfaces.
Suspension
- TETRA uses the LEGNUM's 4-wheel multi-link arrangement optimally
tuned for SUV requirements. The rear suspension incorporates a self-leveling
mechanism that keeps the body attitude regardless of the load.
- MAIA (Mini Advanced & Ideal Archetype)
A new-form minicar for the 21st century, MAIA represents a further
evolution of the MAUS exhibited at the last Tokyo Motor Show. Developed
to be (1) Eco-friendly, (2) People-friendly, (3) Pedestrian-friendly,
MAIA brings the flexible space utility demanded by consumers today to
the passenger transport capability provided by current minicars, as
well as a revolutionary multi-purpose luggage capability that befits
a new-form minicar for the 21st century. MAIA is an attractive minimum
dimension vehicle that offers superior levels of mobility, utility and
safety, as well as being eco-friendly.
(1) Styling
- New-concept packaging marries together a one-box cabin with the
reassuring appearance of a two-box vehicle. Features include large
bumpers and flexible corner protectors, with a "human-fit" cabin and
generous consideration for pedestrian safety as well as for roomy
occupant accommodation.
(2) Interior
Cockpit
- In a clean layout that provides only the information required, primary
controls and switches are grouped together on a panel located inside
the rim of the steering wheel. Other driver-friendly features include
an easily-visible pop-up center display, and a laterally adjustable
steering column.
Seat arrangements
- With its flat floor, MAIA uses a novel satellite seating system
that enables a variety of configurations. The system comprises the
seat, a satellite seat that swings around the seat, and a seatback
that can be extended laterally and can be tailored to provide 2-seater
and 4-seater modes. Moving the satellite seat on its slide rails enables
a wide variety of seating patterns, improving utility.
(3) Dimensions & powertrain
- Measuring 3380 mm long x 1500 mm wide and 1550 mm high, the compact
body provides generous accommodation space and occupant safety. Powered
by a 1.1-liter GDI engine mated to a continuously variable transmission,
the eco-friendly MAIA returns miserly fuel economy and very low emissions.

reflect the technology and know-how feedback from Mitsubishi Motors
highly successful rally campaigning.

Truck & Bus Area
Mitsubishi Motors is focused on creating commercial vehicles
for the 21st century that will coexist harmoniously with society and the
global environment, and provide comfort and safety for the driver, together
with outstanding efficiency for the operator. The company's exhibits represent
its full lineup of trucks and buses, and include the MCAT multi-purpose
transporter, the shape of things to come in the transportation field,
the DI diesel-powered SUPER GREAT heavy-duty truck and the New ROSA small-size
bus that has just undergone a full model change.
Main exhibits
- MCAT (Mitsubishi City Advance Transporter)
People- and cargo-friendly 21st century city transporter, MCAT embodies
new styling that gives a peek at what we can expect in the way of transporters
in the near future, to a more convenient, more comfortable and safer
theme. Created around a small bus safety body, MCAT uses a multi-purpose
passenger cabin / luggage compartment to flexibly cater to a variety
of people and/or cargo transportation requirements. Ramps which deploy
automatically at the side and rear realize a major improvement in entry
and exit and in cargo handling. And the high-efficiency series HEV power
plant assures clean operation around town and the suburbs.
(1) Styling
Body size
- External dimensions are virtually the same as those of a small-size
bus. The styling design creates an exterior that blends into the urban
backdrop, and the large glass side panels that extend from the waistline
up to the roof keep the spacious interior light and airy. A Full Face
Protector that wraps round the front end and into the sides protects
the crew, while a flexible bumper and panorama windshield enhances
pedestrian safety and protection.
Interior
- A number of features and functions are compactly packed into the
interior. Power is supplied by a hybrid electric system that comprises
a CNG-fueled engine generator, high-efficiency motors and lithium
ion batteries. Compact in size, this very eco-friendly system realizes
a very low flat floor. The driver's seat is centrally located to provide
better visibility when making nearside turns. The cockpit layout is
designed to make all controls and switches immediately identifiable
for easier operation and incorporates a number of smart features.
A Multi-display screen displays navigational information as well as
indicating the operational status of the climate control and audio
systems. Two Perimeter Monitors enable the driver to check for pedestrians
or obstructions around the vehicle. A Vehicle Management System improves
operational efficiency and ensures more positive communications in
this increasingly information-based age.
- 4.8 m long, 2 m high and with fold-up seats and power-operated partitions,
the cabin-and-luggage compartment provides a flexible and very roomy
multi-purpose space. The compact HEV power system installation results
in a flat floor.
(2) Entry & exit
- The large swing-and-slide side door entrance is fitted with a retractable
ramp that eliminates the step that can be an awkward obstacle to some
passengers. The rear uses a large gull-wing door, which is practically
free of mechanical links to the luggage compartment. The ultra-low
340 mm ground clearance and a two-mode ramp that deploys from the
ultra-low floor enables items to be loaded without having to negotiate
steps or tailboards.
(3) Power plant
- MCAT utilizes a compact, clean, high-efficiency HEV system to power
all wheels. Power is supplied to the front wheels by a CNG leanburn
engine generator and high-efficiency motor, and to the rear wheels
by in-wheel motors. A brake energy recovery system increases efficiency.
The use of high-power lithium ion batteries realizes a substantial
reduction in weight.
- ROSA small bus
The development brief for the New ROSA, which has just had its first
full redesign in 11 years, called for the experience and engineering
prowess Mitsubishi has nurtured over the years through successive
ROSA series to be fully exploited in creating a new high-utility small
bus for the 21st century; one that was more comfortable,
safer, offered more relaxed performance and was both people- and eco-friendly.

New Technology Area
Exciting new Mitsubishi Motors technology on display
includes the revolutionary ultra-efficiency GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection)
and Diesel DI (Direct Injection) advanced eco-engines; RISE (Realized
Impact Safety Evolution) body that provides crash protection from all
angles; ITS (Intelligent Traffic System) technology, and a mini-display
showing the history of and the technology used in Mitsubishi's EV/HEV
