Mitsubishi Motors Production, Exports Up in January

Tokyo, February 26, 2003 - Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) today announced production, sales, and export results for January 2003.

Domestic production rose 1.6 percent on year, the third straight monthly increase, to 62,584 units, thanks largely to the Colt compact car launched in November last year and cars bound for North America.

Total overseas production climbed 17.3 percent on year to 70,758 units, up after two months of decline. By area, Asia posted a 7.8 percent to 43,374 units, North America advanced 38.6 percent to 17,175 units, and Europe gained 44.3 percent to 6,980 units.

Exports remained strong with a total of 33,412 units heading overseas in January for a 24.2 percent increase on last year-the tenth straight monthly gain. Exports to Asia gained 24.8 percent to 3,192 units while Europe saw a 96.1 percent increase to 4,919 units. North America bucked the trend with a 13.5 percent drop on year to 13,742 units.

Although overall domestic sales declined 4.5 percent compared to last January on slower sales of the eK Wagon minicar launched in October 2001, robust sales of the new Colt compact car helped sales of vehicles other than minicars surge 69.9 percent. Total domestic sales in January totaled 23,681 units. MMC's market share, including minicars and imports, was 6.2 percent, slightly off from 7 percent in January 2002.
