Mitsubishi Motors Announces Production, Sales and Export Results for March 2003 and FY 2002

Tokyo, April 24, 2003 -Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) today announced production, sales, and export results for March 2003 and the fiscal year ended March 31, 2003.

March 2003 results
Total worldwide production in March gained 2.6 percent to 158,734 units. Of this, production in Japan was off 4.6 percent at 75,251 units for the second straight monthly decline. Although exports remain strong, the drop in domestic production is due to a decrease in production of commercial vehicles.

Overseas production, meanwhile, gained 10.2 percent to 83,483 units, marking the third consecutive month of gains. By area, Asia excluding Japan rose 16.8 percent to 53,181 units and North America advanced 10.2 percent to 18,463 units. European production totaled 6,408 units, down 24.6 percent over the same month last year.

Domestic sales including minicars returned to growth after six months of decline, posting a 6.7 percent gain on year to 61,950 units. Robust sales of 14,137 units of the Colt subcompact in March-a monthly sales record for the company excluding minicars-coupled with stable sales of the eK Wagon minicar to drive domestic sales back into positive territory. MMC's domestic share including minicars and imports stood at 7.5 percent, unchanged from March 2002.

Exports from Japan remained strong, climbing 9.5 percent to 39,148 for the twelfth monthly gain. By area, exports to Asia totaled 4,054 units, North America 15,501 units, and Europe 9,856 units. As a result of the spin-off of MMC's truck and bus operations in January 2003, regional year-on-year changes are not available due to a change in the system used to tally exports.

Fiscal 2002 results (April 1, 2002 - March 31, 2003)
Total worldwide production for fiscal 2002 climbed 11.2 percent to 1,696,637 units. Domestic production rose 5.1 percent on fiscal 2001 to 766,389 units, the first gain in two years. Overseas production was up for the fourth consecutive year, jumping 16.8 percent to 930,248 units. By area, Asia excluding Japan produced 566,298 units, up 12.7 percent, North American production rose 10.7 percent to 210,187 units, and Europe gained 12 percent to 87,799 units.

Sales in Japan including minicars remained stagnant, declining 12.3 percent on fiscal 2001 to 354,269 units. Although this marks the seventh straight yearly decline, MMC is seeing strong sales of its eK Series minicars, which recently topped 200,000 in accumulated unit sales, and the Colt subcompact. Further momentum is expected when the company launches the Grandis multi purpose vehicle in May. MMC's domestic share including minicars and imports came to 6 percent, slightly down from 6.9 percent in fiscal 2001.

Exports for the year totaled 427,235 units, up 28 percent on the previous fiscal year. As a result of the spin-off of MMC's truck and bus operations in January 2003, regional figures and year-on-year changes are not available due to a change in the system used to tally exports.
