14 May 1999, Tokyo. Mitsubishi Motors Corporation announces that its
assembly and sales company in the Philippines, Mitsubishi Motors Philippines
Corporation, earned ISO 9002 Quality Management System certification
from SGS International Certification Services Canada, Inc. in February
this year, and was presented with the certificate at a ceremony held
at MMPC on 5 April.
MMPC embarked on the process of gaining ISO 9002 certification in June 1997. Soon thereafter, it was forced to divert resources to the task of maintaining and strengthening its management base due to the economic crisis that enveloped the whole of S.E. Asia. Despite this difficult situation, the efforts of everyone at MMPC were rewarded this February when its quality management systems were granted formal ISO 9002 certification. The certification applies to, "The manufacture of passenger cars, the Dynamic Family Wagon strategic model series, light commercial vehicles, and light- and medium-duty trucks", and was granted under the 1994 version of ISO 9002.
Mitsubishi Motors engine and transmission manufacturer in the Philippines, Asian Transmission Corporation, is also expected to earn ISO 9002 certification this year.
Hit badly by the currency crisis of 1997, the automobile market in the Philippines remains very depressed, and competition fierce. In January 1998, MMPC launched the ADVENTURE semi-bonnet type Dynamic Family Wagon model. Well received by the market, ADVENTURE made a significant contribution to Mitsubishi brand sales of 19,280 units in 1998, for a 24% share of the market, and enabling the company to regain leading share for the first time in nine years.
Mitsubishi Motors has earned ISO 9002 certification at its Nagoya, Kyoto, Mizushima and Tokyo Motor Vehicle Works, and at Pajero Manufacturing Co., Ltd. The company's passenger car Motor Vehicle Works at Nagoya, Kyoto and Mizushima have earned ISO 14001 Environmental Management system certification. The company's main truck manufacturing facility, the Tokyo Motor Vehicle Works, is expected to earn ISO 14001 certification this year. The company believes that ISO certification of its facilities in Japan and overseas testifies to the fact that it is establishing the kind of work environment that befits its status as a global-scale enterprise.
