Mitsubishi Motors Thai Unit Gives Back to Local Community

Tokyo/Bangkok, January 15, 2003 -Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) today announced its local subsidiary in Thailand, MMC Sittipol (MSC), established the Mitsubishi Motors Jumbo Fund and plans to join the Thailand Environment Institute (TEI) elephant protection project.

MMC President and CEO Rolf Eckrodt and MSC President and CEO Toshikyuki Yamanishi jointly presented a Mitsubishi Strada G-Wagon for use in the project to TEI president Dr. Thongchai Pansawasdi.

MSC is developing a detailed financial support package for the project that will be officially announced soon. The company has entered into an agreement with TEI to implement an elephant protection project at Kaeng Krachan National Park where about 180 elephants live.

Elephants in Thailand often find themselves in life threatening situations, especially in the dry season when they seek food in local fruit plantations and risk being killed. This raised the concern of Her Majesty the Queen, who asked for peaceful coexistence between the people and elephants.

TEI is cooperating with Kaeng Krachan and the prestigious Sueb Nakhasathien Foundation to manage the elephant project. The initial phase will take 15 to 20 months and when completed will be a token of the company's honor to Her Majesty the Queen's Sixth Cycle Birthday Anniversary.

The establishment of this fund is in line with MMC's worldwide policy of manufacturing environmentally friendly vehicles and contributing to society as a good corporate citizen.
