Mitsubishi Motors and Year 2K

June 1, 1999

(1) Policy

  • Mitsubishi Motors perceives the Year 2000 problem as a major management issue, and is taking all necessary action to ensure continuity in its operations, and in those of its associate and client companies in Japan and overseas.
  • To avoid inconveniencing customers, the company has implemented a program to identify and remediate potential problems related to Year 2000 in its products and information systems, and at its production and administrative facilities.
  • The company will complete, by the end of June, a contingency plan that ensures core business and service divisions will be able to continue functioning in the event of any unforeseen Year 2K problems arising.

(2) Approach

  • The company started research into potential Year 2K problems in July 1996.
  • In July 1998, the company set up the Information Systems Committee(ISC)-comprising representatives of all systems departments and production engineering departments, and chaired by an executive vice president (CIO)-to direct the planning, initiation and coordination of remediate action.
  • The ISC stays in close touch with all corporate units likely to be affected by Year 2K, and reports regularly to senior management on the current state of progress.
  • By the end of October 1998, the company had ascertained that none of its products, either current or older models, will be affected by Year 2K.
