Changes to corporate organization

February 25, 2000

25 February 2000, Tokyo: Mitsubishi Motors Corporation announces that, effective 1 April, it will implement in the corporate organization the changes that are outlined below.

1. Date of introduction

1 April 2000.

2. Purpose and aims of changes

Mitsubishi Motors is currently pushing forward a number of management measures designed to make it more market-oriented and to restructure the operations of the company itself and of group companies. The latest round of organizational changes incorporate elements of "Reform and Fighting Spirit" and "Giving Greater Priority to Operational Autonomy" - the qualities considered to be essential at the current time for the company to achieve these aims. The changes will result in a clearer delineation of individual authority and responsibilities, will speed up the decision-making process and will also help consolidate the financial foundation and boost the competitiveness of individual operations. The changes come under three major areas, as outlined below.

(1)

To strengthen the financial base of, and to more clearly define the scope of, its truck and bus operations, Mitsubishi Motors will establish a truck and bus internal-company. The internal-company will:

  • Have an organization that is straightforward and slim in structure
  • Exploit to the maximum the strengths and qualities of the Mitsubishi Motors group
  • Enable a smoother transition when spun-off to form a separate entity
  • Offer the most appropriate reorganization in view of the capital tie-up with Volvo

(2)

To facilitate a major restructuring of its minicar operations, Mitsubishi Motors will newly establish a flexible and responsive organization in which responsibilities and authorities are more clearly defined and that will make the company more competitive in the minicar segment.

(3)

Other changes will be made in order to promote attainment of the targets and aims of Heart-Beat 21, the new mid-term management plan, and to make the organization more innovative, efficient and profitable and more capable of matching and beating the competition.

3. Details of changes involving Headquarters, Offices and Departments

  • The Headquarters of Truck & Bus Operations will be closed down and a new internal company called the Mitsubishi Fuso Truck & Bus Company (tentative), having its own president, will be established.
  • A new Office of Minicar Operations (tentative), headed by a Corporate General Manager, will be established.
  • Changes will be made to the organization of the quality and engineering departments, to the Car Research & Development Center, to the Kyoto Plant and to the Office of Domestic Car Operations.
