Line-off ceremony marks start of CVT mass production
at
New Yagi Component Plant in Kyoto

April 19, 2000

19 April 2000, Tokyo: Mitsubishi Motors Corporation announces that a line-off ceremony was held at the new Kyoto Plant-Yagi on 19 April, starting at 11am, to mark the commencement of mass production of CVT(Continuously Variable Transmissions) at the newly completed component plant.

The ceremony was attended by Mr. Tadayoshi Juge, Plant General Manager of the Kyoto Plant, other company officers, and by Mr. Yasuhiro Nakagawa, mayor of Yagi-cho, and other local dignitaries.

Construction of the Kyoto Plant-Yagi buildings started in August 1997 and was completed in August 1998. Installation of plant and equipment began in October 1998 as the facility geared up for the start of production today.

The CVT that went into mass production today is coupled with MMC's GDI(*1) engine, manufactured at the company's Kyoto Plant, in the GDI-CVT new age powertrain that will debut in a new 5-number size sedan to be launched in the near future. Advanced integrated management of GDI engine and CVT transmission brings together the benefits of very low fuel consumption and silky-smooth performance and driveability.

The Kyoto Plant-Yagi is capable of producing 300,000 CVTs a year (operating on a double-shift). Plans call for the production of 80,000 units this year, and 200,000 in 2001.
