CYPRESS, Calif. (June 1, 2000) - Highlighted by strong SUV and Galant
sales, Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America, Inc. (MMSA) reported May 2000
sales of 29,390 vehicles, the best sales month in its 18-year corporate
history.
Some figures of note for MMSA's May 2000 sales:
- May sales of 29,390 units is a 31.3% rise from May
1999's 22,384 vehicles and beats the previous company record sales
month of 28,090 vehicles set in November 1999
- Nearly all product lines showed sales rises, led by best-ever May
sales for Galant mid-sized sedan with 8,241 units sold,
up 51.2% from 5,450 in May 1999 and mid-sized SUV Montero Sport
with 5,647 units sold, up 21.4% from 4,652 units
- Mirage 4-door sedan had its best May ever, selling 4,879 units,
up 33.4% from May 1999
- Sales of 2001 Montero luxury SUV rose nearly 585% over May
1999 to 2,205 units
- 2000 year-to-date sales of 124,243 vehicles represents a
33.7% increase from 1999's year-to-date sales of 92,945
"May has always been a strong month, but Mitsubishi's sales numbers
surpassed even our most optimistic estimates," said Pierre Gagnon, MMSA
executive vice president and chief operating officer. "While the strong
economy is a factor, our ongoing sales strength is fueled by a combination
of a hot product line-up and a dealer network that is very enthusiastic
about this franchise."
Citing a recent survey from the National Automobile Dealers of America
(NADA), Gagnon said that Mitsubishi Motors has shown the most improvement
among all 33 automotive franchises operating in the U.S. market in dealer
satisfaction.
