Pajero |
| Description of the Defect |
There is a possibility that diaphragm in accumulator of the hydraulic brake booster(HBB) might be manufactured improperly, which has an insufficient durability
lifetime resulting in breakage. If customers continue to drive in this condition, there is a possibility that nitrogen pressure in the accumulator drops
excessively and then pressure returns all at once. This condition causes irregular noise (Sound from relief valve operation)
The following two symptoms may result along with this noise
- The brake assist might be delayed in sudden hard braking
- Relatively large brake pedal loads might be required after long-term parking and first engine start, since specific brake pressure takes time to
accumulate.

| Measures for improvement |
Accumulator of the models will be replaced with a new one. |
| Production period |
From August 4,1999 to July 5, 2001 |
| Number of models |
33,014 units |
| Number of occurrence of the defect |
258 |
| Accidents |
No accident has been reported in connection with the defect |
| How to find defect |
The defect was found out through information from customers |

Differences between Recall System and Improvement Campaign
The purpose of the Japanese Recall System is to prevent accidents caused by defective motor vehicles and to protect motor vehicle users. Under the Recall System, a
vehicle manufacturer, after reporting his intention to do so to the MLIT, recovers and repairs vehicles at no cost to the owner in cases where a given number of
vehicles of the same model that it has manufactured or imported, are in a condition in which the structure, equipment or performance do not conform, or may cease to
conform, to vehicle safety or antipollution regulations (Japanese Safety Regulations for Road Vehicles), and where the cause for such non-conformance lies in the design
of the vehicle or in its manufacturing process.
The Improvement Campaign is a system under which the vehicle manufacturer, after reporting his intention to do so to the MLIT, recovers and repairs vehicles at no cost
to the owner in cases where, although the condition of the vehicle does not contravene the regulations in terms of structure, equipment or performance, the manufacturer
judges that for safety or antipollution reasons it is unable to ignore, or may become unable to ignore, the condition of the vehicle and where the cause for this lies
in the design of the vehicle or in its manufacturing process.
