Mitsubishi Motors adds Sport Gear SUV-style model to Grandis minivan range

Tokyo, May 24, 2005 — Mitsubishi Motors Corporation today announced the addition of the all-new Sport Gear model to its Grandis minivan range. Melding SUV brawn with minivan space, carrying capacity and convenience to introduce a new "active & sporty" theme in the minivan segment, Sport Gear stands taller than other Grandis models and is identified by exclusive exterior design. Powered by a 2.4-liter MIVEC engine, Sport Gear goes on sale at affiliated Mitsubishi Motors dealerships throughout Japan on Saturday June 4 The 2WD model carries a tax-inclusive price tag of 2,667,000 yen.

The full Grandis range has also been updated with minor changes to both exterior and interior trim and equipment. The changes include restyled front end to present a wider and more aggressive image, the use of more stylish and sportier interior trim, and a number of improvements introduced to enhance utility levels. The introduction of a new upscale Exceed grade is just one of changes marking a revamped trim level structure in the updated Grandis minivan range that goes on sale on May 28. (The Sport-E model goes on sale on June 4.)

Features distinguishing the new Sport Gear model include: the Multi-select 4WD (standard on 4WD models) with ASC1 and TCL2 handling control systems that deliver outstanding performance over difficult surfaces; new wheels and 215/55R17 tires; and a vehicle height that stands 15mm taller than other models in the range. Evolved and nurtured through the company's Pajero and Delica models, Sport Gear's SUV DNA profile is clearly identified by the use of an exclusively designed bumper with skid-plate garnish, wheel lip moldings, and structural roof rails. These features combine to produce a minivan with macho-tough looks that is ideally suited to a wide spectrum of outdoor adventure lifestyles.

Giving enhanced minivan utiity, Sport Gear features, as standard on most models, a keyless operation system that enables the driver to lock and unlock doors as well as start and stop the engine without key operation, and an electric tailgate. Available convenience features include a voice guidance system to assist the driver in garaging and maneuvering into and from roadside parking spots.

All models in the updated Grandis range qualify for Green Vehicle Tax exemption with a 4-star rating for emission levels that are 75% lower than required by Japanese 2005 Emission Regulations and for returning fuel consumption that surpasses the Japanese 2010 mileage requirements by 5%.

Models in the new Grandis range are offered in four well-defined trim levels — MX, Exceed, Exceed-X and Sport-E that replace the Customer Free Choice system available to date.

1 Active Stability Control System:
Operates to enhance stability by automatically regulating brake force and power output when system sensors detect sudden steering inputs or body attitude changes on slippery surfaces.
2 Traction Control System:
Operates to prevent skidding by automatically regulating brake force and power output when system sensors detect loss of traction in the driving wheels.

  1. Sport Gear walkaround
    (1) Exterior
      - Macho-tough SUV looks stemming from 15mm taller and 40mm wider body, 15mm wider tracks, and the use of exclusive grille, bumper with skid-plate styled garnish, structural roof rails, wheel lip moldings, side sill and door garnish.
      - Four body colors: Warm White Pearl, Cool Silver Metallic, Black Mica and a new Dark Bluish Gray Mica.
    (2) Interior
      - The sporty and stylish interior uses a black keynote design with black/gray two-tone dashboard and black Alcantara3 suede seat upholstery.
      - Available genuine leather upholstery and trim adds a touch of genuine luxury. (Package includes wood rim steering wheel with leather trim.)
      - Aluminum pedal faces, footrest and scuff plates add to the sporty flavor of the interior.
      - High-contrast instrumentation with permanent red illumination.

    (3) Powertrain / Environmental performance
      - Sport Gear uses the same powertrain as other models in Grandis range, coupling a 2.4-liter MIVEC 16-valve SOHC engine to the INVECS-II with Sport Mode 4-speed automatic transmission.
      - Earns a 4-star rating for emission levels that are 75% lower than required by Japanese 2005 Emission Regulations and for returning fuel consumption that surpasses the Japanese 2010 mileage requirements by 5%.
    (4) Running equipment / Safety
      - Standard 215/55R17 mud and snow tires provide optimal grip and running characteristics for all surfaces and conditions.
      - Suspension mountings are reinforced for improved handling and stability.
      - Dual-stage airbags for driver's and passenger seats.
      - Xenon high-intensity discharge headlights have automatic beam leveling that prevents drivers of preceding or oncoming vehicles being dazzled when Sport Gear's tail is weighed down due to rear seat passengers or luggage.
    (5) Utility
      - The electric tailgate that has proved highly popular on the Colt Plus is standard.
      - A keyless operation system allows the driver to operate door locks and to start or stop engine without key operation. This is offered for the first time on a Mitsubishi Motors car.
      - The available voice guidance assists driver when garaging or accessing roadside parking spots. Included in the available Dual-Around Monitor package, this feature is offered for the first time on a Mitsubishi Motors car.
      - Cruise control, which allows the driver to maintain constant speeds on expressways, is standard.
  2. Other Grandis models: changes and improvement
    (1) Introduction of new trim level structure
    In place of the Customer Free Choice system available to date, models in the new Grandis range are now offered in the following four well-defined trim levels:
      MX: Entry-level grade with Multi-mode keyless entry system, separate air-conditioning for rear passengers, security alarm and engine immobilizer are equipped.
      Exceed: Upscale grade adds luggage compartment utility features and luxury interior trim to keyless operation system and electric tailgate.
      Exceed-X: Top-of-line grade adds DVD navigation system, 16-inch alloy road wheels and cruise control to Exceed specification.
      Sport-E: Sporty and premium quality grade with sport suspension lowered by 15mm, 17-inch brilliant-finish alloy road wheels, exclusive front grille and aluminum pedal faces.
    (2) Exterior
      - Design changes to the grille, bumper and engine hood give the front a wider, more aggressive appearance. (Two different grille designs for Exceed variations and Sport-E model.)
      - All models in the Grandis range now share the same headlight extensions, side sill garnish, rear bumper and high-mount auxiliary stop lamp.
      - Grandis models come in a total of eight body colors. Three new colors — Red Metallic, Dark Bluish Gray Mica and Beige Metallic — join the Warm White Pearl, Cool Silver Metallic, Black Mica, Deep Blue Mica and Medium Purple Metallic offered to date.
    (3) Interior
      - All models except the Sport-E trim level use a sporty and stylish Black & Gray or Black & Beige two-tone interior color scheme. Sport-E models come with a Black & Gray color scheme only.
      - The front seats use taller thigh supports for enhanced location while the depth and firmness of the seat squab and back support have been optimized to produce a more European feel. Available black leather seat upholstery brings a sportier, more stylish touch to the interior on Exceed-X and Sport-E trim levels.
      - Aluminum pedal faces and footrest and high-contrast red backlit instrumentation amplify the sporty personality of Sport-E models.
    (4) Powertrain / Environmental performance
      - All models in the Grandis range retain the 2.4-liter MIVEC 16-valve SOHC engine and INVECS-II with Sport Mode 4-speed automatic transmission powertrain.
      - Changes to the catalytic converter and improvements to the exhaust system earn 4-star rating for emission levels that are 75% lower than those required under Japanese 2005 Emission Regulations and for returning fuel consumption that surpasses the Japanese 2010 mileage requirements by 5%.
    (5) Running equipment / Safety
      - Suspension mountings have been reinforced to improve handling and stability.
      - Dual-stage airbags for driver's and passenger seats.
      - Standard on the Exceed trim level and up, Xenon high-intensity discharge headlights have automatic beam leveling that prevents drivers of preceding or oncoming vehicles being dazzled when the tail is weighed down due to rear seat passengers or luggage.
    (6) Utility
      - The electric tailgate that has proved highly popular on the Colt Plus is standard on Exceed and Exceed-X and available on Sport-E trim levels.
      - A keyless operation system allows the driver to operate door locks and to start or stop engine without key operation. This is offered for the first time on a Mitsubishi Motors car. MX models continue to use the Multi-mode keyless entry system.
