Mitsubishi Motors Corporation announces a partial redesign of the DIAMANTE
4-door saloon series that has established a new medium size category benchmark
and that has sold very successfully since its launch thanks to its pace-setting
new technology. All new models will be powered by Mitsubishi's V6 3.0-liter
GDI*1 engine and will feature an enhanced safety specification
as well as new exterior and interior trim. The redesigned DIAMANTE will
be launched at Galant and Car Plaza dealerships throughout Japan on August
19.
The DIAMANTE follows the GALANT / LEGNUM and PAJERO to
become the third series to be powered by Mitsubishi's environment-friendly,
ultra-efficiency GDI engine. The V6 3.0-liter GDI engine that powers all
new DIAMANTE models returns better mileage than 2.0-liter models while
delivering the same refined performance as 3.0-liter models.
The new DIAMANTE series offers improved safety levels
with SRS airbags for driver and front passenger, anti-lock braking and
Mitsubishi 's new RISE*2 safety body standard on all trim levels,
and with side airbags available. Detail changes enhance the exterior appearance.
And, with prices set on a par with 2.0-liter or 2.5-liter models, the
new 3.0-liter DIAMANTE offers outstanding value for money.

1. Major Product Features
(1) Environment-friendly V6 3.0-liter GDI engine powers all models
- Amazing low fuel consumption. Much lower carbon dioxide emissions.
More powerful than its predecessor. The new benchmark for environment-friendly
power units, Mitsubishi's exciting V6 3.0-liter GDI (Gasoline Direct
Injection) engine achieves all this. Compared with its port-injection
MPI cousin, the V6 3.0-liter GDI engine realizes a 30 percent improvement
in mileage*3, a 10 percent increase in power at normal operating
speeds of 4000rpm, and a 30 percent reduction in the carbon dioxide
emissions believed to be a cause of global warming.

(2) New-look exterior & interior
DIAMANTE's traditional dynamic styling is accented
by: (1) A new sporty-looking sculptured front grille and an under grille
that wraps round into the sides to realize a crisper, more muscular
looking bumper and, (2) Distinctive garnish and combination lamp units
that add to the wide and powerful appearance of the rear end.
The black and light gray interior trim color scheme,
new seat upholstery and a new wood-grain design instrument panel enhance
the luxurious appearance of the interior.
SE-V and up trim levels sport a Nardi leather trimmed
wooden steering wheel and shift knob.
(3) Improved safety levels
[Active Safety]
- INVECS-II with Sport Mode 5-speed A/T: All models are fitted as standard
with Mitsubishi's "smart" automatic transmission that enhances active
safety and fun-to-drive qualities by helping the vehicle to respond
more faithfully to the driver's wishes. The INVECS-II smart automatic
transmission features Adaptive Shift Control and Optimum Shift Control
systems that realize safer and easier driving. A lower first gear enables
better acceleration from rest, while a higher fifth gear makes for better
mileage and quieter driving.
- Preview Distance Control: This system is standard on the SE-R trim
level. When cruise control is engaged, the system uses radar recognition
to monitor the distance to the vehicle ahead and regulates engine power
and the automatic transmission to keep at a safe distance.
- ABS: All models are fitted as standard with anti-lock braking on all
wheels.
- TCL*4 (Traction Control), ECS*5 (Electronically
Controlled Suspension), EPS*6 (Electronically Controlled
Steering): As with the previous series, these advanced systems
are available on top trim levels.
[Passive Safety]
- RISE safety body: All models use Mitsubishi's Realized Impact Safety
Evolution body construction that provides outstanding occupant protection
in the event of front and rear, front offset and side impacts.
- Airbags: All models are fitted as standard with SRS airbags for driver
and front passenger.
- Front Seatbelt Pretensioner: All models are fitted as standard with
front seatbelt pretensioners that take up seatbelt slack and thus locate
the wearer more securely in his seat.
- Side Airbags: Offering additional protection in a side impact, side
airbags are standard on SE-G and SE-R, and available on all other trim
levels.
(4) Improved equipment specification
- MMCS: XE and up trim levels are fitted as standard with the Mitsubishi
Multi-Communication System that adds several features original to Mitsubishi
Motors to the currently popular navigation system.
(5) Attractive prices
- Despite the significant boost in product value stemming from the V6
3.0-liter GDI engine, INVECS-II with Sport Mode 5-speed automatic transmission,
new-look exterior and interior trim and enhanced safety specification,
high-volume GDI DIAMANTE models are offered at prices similar to those
for 2.0- and 2.5-liter models.

SE-R and SE-G two-wheel drive trim levels are
fitted as standard with Mitsubishi's INVECS-II TCL traction control
system This advanced system incorporates Trace Control, which makes
for safer cornering by optimally regulating engine power fractionally
before the vehicle exceeds its cornering limit due to excess speed,
and Slip Control, which helps the vehicle move off and accelerate
more smoothly on slippery surfaces by regulating engine power to
retain optimum tire grip. When coupled with MMCS (Mitsubishi Multi-Communication
System), INVECS-II TCL also has a Preview feature that, when the
navigation system is in the route-display mode, detects when the
vehicle is about to enter a corner too fast and activates the Trace
Control for safer cornering.

Standard on the SE-R trim level, INVECS-II ECS
couples Mitsubishi's smart automatic transmission with electronically
controlled suspension. Monitoring road conditions and the way the
driver is operating his vehicle, the system automatically switches
between Tour and Sport damping modes to realize a stable body attitude
and handling and provide the optimum ride for urban, expressway
or hilly country driving.

Mitsubishi's electronically controlled power
steering system is standard on the SE-R trim level. Electronically
controlled steering normally increases steering weight slightly
for expressway motoring. INVECS-II EPS is also programmed to automatically
reduce steering effort slightly when driving along winding hilly
roads hilly roads, thereby reducing driver fatigue and realizing
more precise steering.
